Hon. George Meets with Hennepin County Commissioner Opat

Since 1993, Commissioner Michael Opat has been Commissioner of Hennepin County First District and has continued to provide prudent leadership throughout his tenure. On Friday, March 16th the Commissioner paid a courtesy visit at the Liberian Consulate in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Liberia in Minnesota, Mr. Jackson K. George, Jr. welcomed Commissioner Opat and informed him of the functions of the Consulate. He said his focus is to ensure that Liberia benefits from trade opportunities from states in the Midwest especially Minnesota. The Consul General indicated to the Commissioner that “with more than five hundred Fortunate 500 companies in Minnesota, and with the relationship Liberians in Minnesota has built over the years, there is no reason Liberia cannot benefit from trade and investment”
For his part, Commissioner Opat thanked Hon. George for the warm welcome and expressed optimism that such a Consulate will do well serving the largest concentration of Liberians in the United States. Commissioner Opat pledged to link the Consulate with the proper authorities to ensure Liberia and Minnesota do business.
The Commissioner also met with the leadership of the Liberian Business Association in the Diaspora. The discussion centered on how the Business Association and the County can work together to ensure that the Blue Line coming through his district does not affect minority businesses. Hon. George who is also the president of the business association, informed Commissioner Opat that LIBA was working on creating a business accelerator to house many of its businesses. He said the association is being proactive as gentrification can affect small businesses. Hon. George informed the Commissioner that the Liberian Business Association is serious about acquiring a plot of land to build a commercial property for the business accelerator. Commissioner Opat again thanked the association leadership and offer his willingness to help the Business Association in its endeavors.
Commissioner Michael Opat district covers Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Crystal, New Hope, Osseo and Robbinsdale. Present at the meeting were, Mr. Frank Ngafua, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Mr. Michael Rennie member of the board of directors. Apso present were Rebecca Dennis, Executive Assistant and Marilyn Thompson Administrative Assistant.
